• O’Sullivan joins Arent Fox from Hand Baldachin & Amburgey LLP
• Position as commissioner of Women’s Professional Soccer league was one of most challenging she’s held
Jennifer O’Sullivan, a former commissioner of the Women’s Professional Soccer league, joined Arent Fox’s Sports group, the law firm announced Feb. 5.
O’Sullivan previously led Hand Baldachin & Amburgey LLP‘s Sports and Entertainment group and has worked in the industry for more than two decades, including as general counsel for RSE Ventures, a sports and entertainment venture company.
She will counsel Arent Fox’s sports and entertainment clients on mergers and acquisitions, sponsorships, advertising, media matters, league formations and restructurings, and all forms of commercial agreements, the firm said.
O’Sullivan told Bloomberg Law in an email that she considers herself lucky to be working in an industry she’s so passionate about and with such a talented team.
It’s definitely a competitive industry, though, and can be “a bit more intimidating” as a woman because there are far fewer women than men, she said.
O’Sullivan gained a lot of experience while working as commissioner for the Women’s Professional Soccer league and called it “one of the most challenging” positions she’s held.
Her duties ranged from overseeing the board of directors to pitching new sponsors. The experience “tested my business and legal acumen at every turn” but “to have had the opportunity to move the needle on women’s sports in this country” was “remarkable,” O’Sullivan said.
“Jennifer is a sought-after advisor in the sports industry for good reason and we are pleased to welcome her to Arent Fox,” San Francisco Managing Partner Richard L. Brand, who leads the firm’s Sports group, said in a statement.
She “brings incredible experience and perspective,” Brand said.
Arent Fox LLP has approximately 400 attorneys in offices in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington.
Its sport practice has served as outside counsel for numerous professional sports teams such as the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers, DC United, Inter Milan, Los Angeles Galaxy, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat, New York Jets, Phoenix Suns, Portland Trailblazers, San Antonio Spurs, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Washington Capitals, and the Washington Wizards.
