Big Tech’s Purchases of Startups Under Microscope, FTC Chief Says

The Federal Trade Commission may target proposed mergers between big technology platforms and smaller startups as the agency looks to enforce antitrust laws more vigorously, Chairman Joseph Simons said Sept. 25.

It’s an area where the FTC will be “thinking about what to do and how to bring cases,” Simons said at a conference hosted by Georgetown Law in Washington.

Recent examples of such mergers include Amazon’s $1 billion acquisition of online pharmacy PillPack Inc. and Microsoft Corp.’s proposed $7.5 billion bid to acquire open-source code hosting service GitHub Inc.
