Blank Rome LLP is opening a new office in Chicago this week with the addition of a four-partner group from Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP.
The head of the Chicago office will be Kenneth J. Ottaviano, who was an insolvency and restructuring group partner at Katten. He also served on the firm’s board of directors.
He will be joined by former Katten partners Karin H. Berg, William J. Dorsey and Paige Barr Tinkham.
All but Dorsey will be partners in the firm’s finance, restructuring and bankruptcy group. Dorsey will be a partner in Blank Rome’s corporate litigation group.
The four will also be part of Blank Rome’s 100-attorney financial services industry group, which has added eight lawyers to date this year.
Ottaviano, Berg and Tinkham will be focusing their practices on financing, insolvency and restructuring transactions. Dorsey’s practice will center on commercial finance litigation, real estate disputes, and contested merger and acquisition transactions.
Grant S. Palmer, Blank Rome’s managing partner and CEO, said the new team members “are the epitome of Blank Rome lawyers—premier practitioners in their fields who work collaboratively in teams with a singular focus on clients’ needs.”
Blank Rome entered into the Chicago market, said Lawrence F. Flick, head of the firm’s financial services industry group, because it “has a number of clients who are based in, or do business in Chicago, so having an established presence in the city with a stellar group of attorneys will help us provide enhanced service to our clients.
“In addition, the team’s significant experience in financing and restructuring in the healthcare industry will further expand our strong healthcare finance capabilities.”
With some 600 lawyers and principals, Blank Rome boosted its headcount in 2016 when it added more than 100 lawyers from former Washington government contracts and intellectual property law firm Dickstein Shapiro.
Blank Rome also has been extending its geographical reach over the past decade. With the addition of Chicago, the firm said it currently has 14 offices.
“We started offices in Los Angeles and Houston with five lawyers at each, and both now have over 50 lawyers,” Palmer said. “We hope and believe we can our Chicago office will grow like that over time.”
