California Appeals Ban on IMDb Age Disclosure Law

California is appealing a decision that a state law banning online movie database IMDb from publishing actors’ birth dates is unconstitutional, arguing that the law prevents age discrimination.

A federal district court in California held that the law directly restricted free speech. The state’s interest in combating age discrimination in the entertainment industry is compelling, but the measure isn’t “actually necessary” to achieving that goal, the court said in its February decision.

State attorney general Xavier Becerra March 22 appealed the decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
