Nicholas Kourides, deputy general counsel at American International Group Inc., has joined DLA Piper in New York as senior counsel.

Kourides, who is also a professor at Columbia School of Law, will advise DLA’s clients on regulatory and financial aspects of the insurance industry.

His practice will integrate his insurance and banking experiences, advising on pure M&A transactions as well as providing guidance to clients on government regulation, Kourides said.

“I think what Nick brings is a combination of experience and expertise with financial regulation as well as a number of relationships with those regulators and direct insurers that will prove invaluable,” DLA Piper insurance partner David Luce said.

Kourides served as senior vice president and deputy general counsel for AIG with responsibility as AIG’s head of global regulatory and Federal Reserve supervision as well as general counsel for mergers and acquisitions.

In the 1980s and 90s, he was involved with international banking at JP Morgan Chase & Co. and then went on to become general counsel of American Express Bank in the 1990s and 2000s.
