FTC’s Chopra Seeks Privacy Shield Probes in Data Enforcement

Federal Trade Commissioner Rohit Chopra said he wants the agency to review if companies are following Privacy Shield principles during its privacy and data security investigations.

Chopra’s comments Oct. 18 come as European Union officials are examining the Privacy Shield’s data-sharing framework that allows companies like Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Facebook Inc. to transfer troves of data from the EU to the U.S. The shield and other data transfer systems underpin nearly $260 billion in transatlantic digital trade between the EU and U.S.
