Notorious ‘Porno-Trolling Scheme’ Lawyer Pleads Guilty

An attorney behind Prenda Law’s “porno-trolling” scheme, which raised $6 million extorting victims to settle sham copyright infringement lawsuits, has pleaded guilty to federal fraud and money laundering charges.

Attorney Paul R. Hansmeier pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, the Office of the U.S. Attorney for Minnesota announced Aug. 17. Hansmeier, who had been scheduled for trial on Sept. 5 in Minneapolis, faces up to 20 years in prison on each of the fraud and money laundering charges and a criminal fine of up to $500,000.
