Dr. Seuss Enterprises can pursue copyright infringement claims against makers of a Seuss-Star Trek mashup, a federal court in California ruled.
The May 21 ruling by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California shows the complexities in works that appear in different forms through multiple collections. It also emphasizes the importance of registration, which is optional, to enforcing copyrights in the U.S.
The Seuss company asserted copyrights and trademarks in several works, including parts of 1961’s “The Sneetches and Other Stories,” in its lawsuit against former Star Trek screenwriter David Gerrold and ComicMix LLC.
