Prince Estate Wins Sanctions for Deleted Texts in Copyright Row

The owners of a record label will be sanctioned for deleted text messages in a copyright dispute with Prince’s estate, the District of Minnesota ruled March 5.

The court called the destruction of the texts “troubling” and fined the defendants $10,000.

George Ian Boxill worked as a sound engineer for Prince in 2006. After Prince’s death, Boxill created Deliverance LLC with Rogue Music Alliance to market and release recordings from the 2006 sessions. Prince’s estate, represented by Paisley Park Enterprises Inc., sued for copyright infringement. It alleged a confidentiality agreement with Boxill established that Prince solely owned the recordings.
