Quinn Emanuel Snags Former Aide to SEC Chair White

A top adviser to former SEC Chairman Mary Jo White moved to Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP after a decade at the agency, the law firm said June 13.

Michael Liftik, who was a deputy chief of staff under White, joined the firm as a partner in its Washington office. He will work on matters related to government investigations, securities litigation, and cybersecurity, among other issues.

Most recently, Liftik was acting chief of the Complex Financial Instruments Unit in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Enforcement Division. He assumed that role in January after serving as deputy chief of staff and White’s senior adviser on enforcement. Liftik started at the commission in 2007 as an enforcement lawyer.

Before the SEC, he was an associate at Heller Ehrman LLP and Hill & Barlow PC.

Liftik is the only agency alumnus at Quinn Emanuel, according to a spokeswoman for the firm.

Other top White aides have found jobs outside the SEC as well. Former chief of staff Andrew “Buddy” Donohue is an adjunct professor at Brooklyn Law School and a member of the OppenheimerFunds Inc. Denver Board of Trustees. Nathaniel Stankard, a former deputy chief of staff for policy, is a senior adviser to Financial Industry Regulatory Authority president Robert Cook.
