TiVo Loses Another Patent Office Ruling in Comcast Royalty Fight

The U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board said Aug. 7 that patent 8,621,512 is invalid, in its opinions on the agency’s electronic docket.

The patent for the interactive television program guide that allows users to watch one program while simultaneously recording another is an obvious variation of earlier know-how, the review board said.

The patent in the case is one of several Comcast Corp. denied infringing in federal court in New York and is part of legal battle that began when they were unable to renew a licensing agreement.

The patent also is among several named in a case at the U.S. International Trade Commission.

Comcast has filed more than three dozen petitions challenging patents owned by Tivo Corp’s Rovi and Veveo.
