U.S. Firms Can Get Leniency Buying Corrupt Foreign Firms

U.S. companies acquiring foreign entities that actively engage in corruption and bribery can still forgo prosecution if they actively cooperate with the Justice Department, a top official said July 25.

Matthew Miner, deputy assistant attorney general of the DOJ’s Criminal Division, announced at a conference in Washington that the agency’s Foreign Corrupt Practices Act corporate enforcement policy applies to U.S. companies that engage in high-risk foreign mergers as long as they report their acquired firm’s illegal activities to the government.
