Wake Up Call: Fight Over CFPB Leadership Heads for Court

• A federal judge is set to decide who will lead the controversial U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, whose former director, Richard Cordray, recently left. After President Donald Trump moved to install White House budget director Mick Mulvaney as interim chief, Leandra English, who was Cordray’s deputy, asked a federal judge in Washington, D.C., to block the appointment and declare her the agency’s acting director. The judge’s decision could determine the direction of the independent watchdog, whose actions to police mortgages, credit cards and other products have riled big financial companies and Republicans.
