• Embattled Chinese telecom Huawei Technologies Co. hired three Sidley Austin lawyers experienced in export controls and trade sanctions. The company has seen its U.S. sales shrink as it contends with a U.S. blacklisting case and President Trump’s widening trade war against China. Huawei already has Sidley Austin lawyers working on its criminal and other legal challenges in the U.S. It recently hired Steptoe & Johnson and Jones Day for lobbying work, after coming close to shutting down its Washington lobbying operation in late 2018.   • Verizon Communications agreed to sell blogging platform Tumblr to Automattic Inc., which among other things owns online publishing tool WordPress and is getting advice from Cooley. Tumblr has had three owners in six years, including Yahoo!, which paid about $1.1 billion for it in 2013. Verizon, which got Tumblr as part of its acquisition of Yahoo in 2017, is said to be selling it for a tiny fraction of that price. (BN) (Cooley.com)

  • Taylor English Duma, which bills itself a “hybrid” firm, said it entered the New York market by adding blockchain and securities lawyer Chi-Ru Jou as a partner in its corporate and litigation practice groups. According to her LinkedIn, Jou is among other things a former Paul Weiss associate and arrives most recently from CKR Law, where she was a partner.
