Wake Up Call: Tipster Email Led to Arrest in Capital One Data Breach

  • Capital One Financial Corp. lost data from about 106 million credit card applications after a former Amazon systems engineer hacked the bank’s firewall to get into a server run by cloud-computing company Amazon Web Services, according to reports. Federal prosecutors in Seattle said former Amazon.Com Inc. employee Paige Thompson stole personal information, including some social security numbers, and boasted about it online. The breach, possibly one of the biggest to ever hit a bank, shows how companies’ lapses in protecting records can enable hackers to steal vast amounts of consumer data.
