Wisconsin Bar Dues Requirement Unconstitutional, Lawyers Say (1)

Wisconsin’s requirement that attorneys pay bar dues to practice in the state unconstitutionally compels them to participate in the state bar’s advocacy, a pair of lawyers says in a new suit.

Adam Jarchow and Michael D. Dean’s April 8 challenge to state bar-dues requirements is the latest of several filed in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 ruling in Janus v. AFSCME that curbed public sector unions’ power to collect dues from nonmembers. The high court revived a bar dues case—against the North Dakota state bar—in light of Janus in December.
