Workflows: Ogletree Hires Data Analytics Director

Labor and employment law firm Ogletree Deakins now has its first director of data analytics.

In that role, Dr. Andrew Cook, a labor economist, will oversee Ogletree’s data analytics operations and work with the firm’s knowledge management, information technology, and pricing groups.

“Data is becoming more and more important, especially in employment law. HR is becoming more quantitative,” Cook told Bloomberg Law May 8. “We want to make the process more efficient for our clients and ourselves.”

Cook has experience with matters involving employment discrimination, wage and hour laws, damage calculations, executive compensation surveys, statistical sampling, and false claims questions, according to the firm. He also has experience with the investigations of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Office of Federal Contractor Compliance Programs, the firm said.

Cook also is skilled in using data to help companies streamline their processes for hiring, compensation, and resource allocation.

It’s helpful for Ogletree attorneys and their clients to “understand the risk” from wage and hour class actions before they go to mediation, Cook said. So he hopes to build “a team that can handle that work in-house.” He and his team will be able to perform exposure analyses for class actions “that are typically farmed out to consulting firms,” he said.

Cook will be based in the firm’s Torrance, Calif., office, but he envisions training team members and positioning them among the firm’s 52 offices. “We will be ramping up as we see the demand,” he said.
